We often take breathing for granted. After all, when everything is working as it should, we don't need to think about breathing, it just happens. However, if we take time to breath intentionally, it becomes much more powerful.

Studies show that there are many benefits derived from deep, controlled breathing. Potential benefits include*:

  • reduced stress and anxiety
  • increased focus and productivity
  • enhanced relaxation
  • increased ability to control emotions
  • improved memory
  • boosted immune system
  • improved energy metabolism
  • blood pressure regulation

Sounds great, right? Even better, focused breathing is completely free and only takes a few minutes a day. You can get started by taking 2 minutes once or twice a day to slow down your breathing. Try breathing in for 4 counts and out for 8. The 4-7-8 method is also popular. Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7 counts, and exhale for 8 counts. If you want a little coaching, try a guided meditation app like Calm or Headspace

Essential Oils for Deep Breathing

Using essential oils aromatically can enhance your deep breathing practice. Several oils contain chemical compounds such as d-limonene, 1,8-cineole, and alpha-pinene that support respiratory health.*  Diffusing or inhaling Eucalyptus, Cardamom, Frankincense, and Juniper Berry will enable you to take advantage of these compounds.* Peppermint and Breathe Respiratory Blend can also be diffused or inhaled to help maintain clear airways and support your deep breathing.*
