Scented Sidewalk Chalk

What's better than an arts and crafts project to keep kids busy in the summer? An outdoor arts and crafts project!

Sidewalk chalk is the perfect medium to get in some creativity while enjoying a sunny day. It's versatile too. You can go with the traditional handheld chalk sticks, sidewalk chalk paint, or use fun molds to come up with all sorts of fun shapes. Add to the sensory experience with essential oils. Any citrus oil like Lemon, Lime, Wild Orange, and Grapefruit are perfect for a summery scent. You can match the aroma to the color of the chalk - Green = Lime, Yellow = Lemon, Purple = Lavender, Brown = Cinnamon Bark, etc.

Sidewalk Chalk

  • 3 cups Plaster of Paris
  • 1 cup Water
  • Several drops Food Coloring Paste
  • 8-16 drops Essential Oil

  1. Mix Plaster of Paris and water.
  2. Add food coloring and essential oils to mixture or divide mixture into smaller portions so you can create multiple colors and scents.
  3. Pour into molds of choice. (Try ice cube trays, popsicle molds, toilet paper tubes lined with wax paper, muffin pans, plastic cups. Silcone molds are a great option because they come in tons of shapes and the chalk is easy to remove.)
  4. Remove from mold when hardened.

Sidewalk Chalk Paint
