Tips for Using Roller Bottles with Essential Oils

Tips for using roller bottles with essential oils

You know essential oils are a big part of my life. I love how they fit in to my overall commitment to wellness and healthy living. But, I am also all about living simply and I try to apply that to every aspect of my life including how I use essential oils. That is where roller bottles come in. They are pretty much a life saver and make it super easy to incorporate essential oils into my life.

  • Topical Application Roller bottles are the perfect way to apply oils topically. They enable you to apply directly to the desired location without waste or mess. I want to use every single drop of my oils. (Remember to always check the label of each oil to make sure it is appropriate for topical application.)
  • Dilution You can control the level of dilution making it easy to adjust for use with children and to avoid skin sensitivities. Dilute with a carrier oil directly in your roller bottle or make a larger batch then pour into multiple bottles. It's a good idea to use a funnel when filling small bottles.
  • Convenience Roller bottles are easy to slip in a bag, drawer, or pocket so they are always handy. For example, you might want to keep one bottle of massage blend in your nightstand and one in your gym bag.
  • Organization You can find roller bottles in many colors, finishes, and sizes making it easy to organize your blends and diluted oils.

Selecting the Right Roller Bottle

Last week I talked about choosing the right spray bottle for your essential oils.  A lot of what I mentioned applies to roller bottles as well, especially that tinted glass is the best way to go to maintain the potency of your oils. Also, stick with a stainless steel roller ball whenever possible. Read more in our article "Tips for Using Spray Bottles with Essential Oils".

Filling Your Roller Bottles

Now that we have gone over what makes roller bottles so awesome and a few tips on selecting the right one, let's fill them up!

If I am using a 10ml bottle, I might add anywhere from 3 to around 15 drops of essential oil and then fill the remainder of the bottle with a carrier oil. You can play around with amounts to see what is right for each particular oil or blend. For a simple dilution, try Lavender Essential Oil and Fractionated Coconut Oil and use for a calming bedtime massage.

On to the good stuff...BLENDS! The possibilities are endless. Here are a few to get you started, but get creative and have fun coming up with your own custom blends. It's easy! Hold open bottles in front of your nose and move the bottles around while sniffing. You'll know when you find something that works together.
