I did a little thought exercise to day. I imagined that I could only have five essential oils to get me through the summer. My initial reaction was, "The horrors!". After a few deep breaths, I whittled down my list of must-have essential oils. (Wait! Aren't they all must-haves? I'm kidding, I can do this.) So here you go - five essential oils that would get me through the summer in a pinch.
TerraShield Outdoor Blend: My family tries to spend a lot of time outdoors in the summer. TerraShield provides natural protection from environmental annoyances.* It makes everything from camping, to outdoor concerts, to sitting on the back porch much more enjoyable. It is also effective at keeping bugs at bay in the garden.
Citrus Essential Oils: Is it cheating if I include a category of oils? I suppose it is, but it is quite hard to choose. There are so many options - Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Wild Orange, Tangerine, and ,of course, Citrus Bliss Invigorating Blend. I'd probably go with Lemon since it is is so versatile - flavors, cleans, energizes, etc.* I love adding a couple of drops of Lemon to my water when trying to stay hydrated in the summer heat.
Peppermint: It cools the skin, freshens the air, uplifts the mood, promote clear respiration, and can soothe stomach discomfort.* Since I can only choose five, I need some serious multitaskers on the list. Add a few drops of Peppermint to a spray bottle of water to stay cool during long, hot days.
Melaleuca: Summer is full of scratches and scrapes from all that time spent outside. Melaleuca is every mom's best friend since it can soothe minor skin irritations.* It can also boost immunity when taken internally, cleanse anything from skin to surfaces, and help toenails and fingernails look their best.* Perfect for sandal season.
Lavender: Last but not least, Lavender. This was a hard decision. Lavender brings a lot to the table on its own, but it also made the list because it complements other oils so well. It enhances Melaleuca's ability to soothe skin irritations.* Taken internally with Lemon and Peppermint, it helps ward of seasonal environmental threats.* Add a few drops of Lavender and Peppermint to a spray bottle of water and you have an after-sun spray that will cool, soothe, and nourish the skin.* As a stand alone oil, it calms and reduces stress.* It also helps promote sleep which comes in handy since you might be traveling during the summer and sleeping in unfamiliar environments.* I also suggest rubbing it on the feet of little ones that insist it can't be bed time because it is still light outside.
