Lip Care 101


Your lips are front and center all the time. In photos, when you are chatting with friends,  when you enjoying a meal with family, and especially when giving someone a smooch. With a little effort you can be sure that you are putting your best lips forward in every situation.

Stay Hydrated

One of the best things you can do for you lips is to drink plenty of water every day. Adequate water intake is important for many reasons including providing moisture to your lips from within. Add a few drops of Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, or Wild Orange to your water for a burst of flavor. Upping your intake of omega-3 fatty acids will also hydrate your system. If you live in a drier climate, you might also consider running a humidifier in your home. Run it while you sleep to wake up with happy lips and skin.

On the flip side, avoid things that will dry out your lips - licking your lips, some long lasting lipsticks, and picking at your lips.

Exfoliate Regularly

Lips need to be exfoliated just like skin. You should use a gentle scrub once a week to make sure lips are able to absorb moisture effectively. A sugar scrub is effective and it doesn't hurt that it will taste good if some happens to make its way past your lips. Try this basic recipe below or take it a step further with our Brown Sugar & Honey Lip Scrub.

Basic Sugar Scrub

Combine all ingredients and store in a sealed container. You can get creative with your essential oils. My favorite is Grapefruit in the sugar scrub. Yummy!

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

It is critical to apply lip balm on a daily basis. It not only provides moisture, but it protects lips as well. Simple, natural ingredients do an amazing job at keeping lips soft and healthy. If you are a DIYer, try this recipe.

Lip Balm

Chop or grate the beeswax or buy the beeswax pastilles. Place beeswax, coconut, and other oils except for essential oils in the upper part of a double boiler or place a bowl on top of a pan of boiling water.

Melt the wax into the oils. Gently stir in essential oils and pour into lip balm containers. Have fun experimenting with oils. I love using Peppermint. You can also add a tiny bit of beet juice to tint the lip balm pink.

I mentioned above that long lasting lipsticks can dry out your lips. That's no reason to stop having fun with color. These all natural DIY lip stains are the perfect solution. And, of course, with the addition of essential oils, they smell as good as they look.

Raspberry-Blackberry Peppermint


Place your chosen fruit and essential oil into a small bowl. Add fractionated coconut oil and mash the fruit into a soupy mixture. Drain the liquid into an airtight container, removing any chunks. Store in refrigerator for long-term use. Apply a layer or two to lips.
