We often tell children to eat nutritious food so they can "grow big and strong". But did you know what we eat can also affect how our brains develop? Proper nutrition plays a key role in promoting physical as well as mental wellness. Plant-based eating is a great way to pack in "brain food" that may improve memory, focus, and other cognitive functions.

Brain Food Recipes

Rosemary Lemon Hummus

(Recipe by doTERRA)
Ingredients:
  • 1 can garbanzo beans (½ liquid drained)
  • 2 garlic cloves, peeled
  • 2 tablespoons veggie broth or aquafaba
  • 2 tablespoons Tahini
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • 2 drops Lemon Essential Oil 
  • 1 drop Rosemary Essential Oil
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
Directions:
  1. Blend all ingredients in food processor until smooth. (Add more olive oil or water to achieve desired consistency.)
  2. Chill in refrigerator 30 minutes and serve with sliced cucumbers, carrots, cherry tomatoes, and crackers.

Basil Spinach Pesto

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups spinach leaves, washed thoroughly
  • ½ cup of walnuts
  • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons veggie broth or aquafaba
  • 1 drop Basil Essential Oil
  • 2 drops Lemon Essential Oil 

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a food processor.
  2. Mix until combined. Scrape sides to get all the spinach leaves, if needed.
  3. Store in air tight glass jar for up to three months.

Raw Cacao Bites

(Recipe by doTERRA)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup raw walnuts
  • 3–5 pitted dates
  • 1 ½ tablespoons raw cocoa powder or to liking
  • 1 drop Wild Orange Essential Oil
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cacao nibs
  • 1 pinch of sea salt

Directions:

  1. Soak raw walnuts in water overnight.
  2. Rinse several times, or until water becomes clear.
  3. Grind ingredients in high speed processor until it turns into a dough.
  4. Shape it as you like and put it in the fridge until chilled.
