Respiration is basically comprised of breathing in and breathing out. However, in between those two acts, there is a lot that goes on. The respiratory system filters and warms air. Lungs filter oxygen out of the air and send it through the bloodstream to every part of your body. When that blood makes its way back to the lungs, it is depleted of oxygen but carries lots of carbon dioxide. The lungs then filter out the carbon dioxide to expel when you breathe out. Obviously, this system is crucial to your health. Exercise is one of the main ways to keep your respiratory system in great shape. Essential oils offer another way to support healthy respiratory function.*
Essential oils can support our respiratory systems in two basic way. By purifying the air we breathe to help keep out toxins and by promoting a healthy respiratory system through aromatic, topical, and internal use.*
Diffusing certain essential oils is an excellent way to remove toxins as well as seasonal and environmental threats from the air. Try diffusing the following oils and blends. You can also use these oils to make an air purification spray. Simply add 20 drops of the oil or blend to an 8oz glass spray bottle then fill with water.
Respiratory System Support
Essential oils can be used aromatically, topically, and internally to offer more direct respiratory system support. The following single oils all promote open airways and can be effective against seasonal and environmental threats.*
They can all be used topically or aromatically. Add to a carrier oil to dilute then rub them on the chest, neck, back, or soles of the feet. Diffuse, add to a warm bath, or simply apply to your hands then cup them around nose and inhale to use aromatically.
Cardamom, Peppermint, Black Pepper, and Rosemary can also be used internally. Try making Peppermint or Cardamom tea by adding a couple of drops of either oil to hot water. Inhale as you drink to maximize benefits.
doTERRA also has products designed specifically to address respiratory issues.
