Ayurveda is a health system that grew from spiritual writings in ancient India called the Vedas, or Book of Wisdom. The term Ayurveda is translated to mean ayus=life and veda=knowledge. Together it has come to represent a way of looking at the science of our life. Not just in the physical aspect but combining mind, body, senses, and soul. It is truly a holistic approach to wellness.
A great way to begin balancing our systems is through a gentle Ayurvedic cleanse. Ayurveda teaches that proper digestion is one of the keys to staying healthy. Everyone has a digestive fire or "agni." When it isn't working properly, we are unable to process things in our lives effectively which leads to "ama," a buildup of toxins that imbalance our health.
5 Gentle Cleansing Practices
1. Scrape Your Tongue
Use a tongue scraper or the back of a spoon and gently scrape away any white coating that has built up overnight. Learn more about tongue scraping and its benefits HERE.
2. Drink Warm Water with Lemon
Warm water with lemon (or a drop of Lemon Essential Oil) helps encourage toxins to release and supports healthy liver function.* It also helps clear away congestion, enhance mood, freshen breath, boost immunity, and calm cravings.* Try it in the morning to get the day off to a good start.
3. Eat Kitchari
Kitchari is made from rice, split yellow mung dal beans, spices and veggies. It is full of nutrients and also serves to give your digestive system a rest. Click HERE for a basic recipe along with several variations.
4. Practice Breathing
Most of us breathe very shallowly. Practice yogic breathing or even set aside a couple minutes just to focus on deep sustained belly breathing with long inhales and exhales. (Check out this fun video from Sesame Street about belly breathing. Share with the kids in your life or just enjoy on your own.)
5. Perform Daily Warm Oil Self Massage
An Ayurvedic self-massage helps eliminate built-up toxins. Read Aromatic Oil Massage: Application Method for Self-Care. (For a step-by-step video, click HERE.)
