Essential Oils for Emergency Preparedness

Be Prepared

In the U.S., September is National Preparedness month sponsored by FEMA and the Department of of Homeland Security. The goal is to educate the public about how to prepare for big emergencies, like natural disasters. They urge everyone to become informed, make a plan, build a kit, and get involved.

In my family, we use this month to go over fire drills at home, memorize emergency contact numbers, etc.  We also go through our supplies and make sure everything is up-to-date. Buying new stuff when needed.

Since we have started to using essential oils, I've come to know what an invaluable resource these would be in a disaster situation. I thought I'd share a few things I've found.

Build a Kit

Bug Out Bags, Ready Bags, 72 Hour Kits . . . whatever you call them, it's a good idea to gather a few items in case you need to leave home in a hurry.

What to put into your kit? Here's a few great lists that I found:

A few things missing from these kits- Essential Oils of course! Here are three reasons I think you should include essential oils in your kit:

1. They have a really great shelf life. You don't have to rotate these like you would other medications. Currently doTERRA has been doing some testing and found most properly stored oils with great potency at 10 years and counting. Citrus oils are a little less- around 5 years.

2. They are more versatile than traditional remedies. Not only do they support wellness, they also can uplift mood, help purify the air, and be added to your food for flavoring. Can a small bottle of traditional meds do all that? Nope.

3. Each drop is super concentrated. You only need a small amount to greatly impact your health. Also, the low price per drop means that you can fit several bottles in your kit and it will last a long time. Besides the oils themselves, it'd be a good idea to add a few oil application items, like a carrier oil (probably should rotate this), sample bottles, spray bottles, etc. These will make using your oils much easier and help them go further.
