25 Reasons to Love Essential Oils

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS, READ OUR POLICY PAGE FOR MORE INFO.

Reason #1: True essential oils come from nature.

Essential oils are volatile aromatic compounds that come from the roots, stem, leaves, flowers, seeds, flowers, and peels of plants. They are usually steam distilled or cold-pressed and contain a variety of chemical constituents that give them their unique aromas and therapeutic benefits.  Over 3,000 varieties of volatile aromatic compounds have been identified to date. The ratio of aromatic compounds in each oil depends on where the plant was grown, what time of year it was harvested, the weather cycles, and every step of the production process. (More Info: What Are Essential Oils?; Differences in Essential Oil Quality)

I Heart Oils Tip: Fragrance oils are not essential oils and are either a low-cost hybrid or a synthetic replication that will not give you therapeutic benefits and may cause harm. Also, fake or adulterated essential oils abound, make sure to buy from a source with outstanding testing procedures.

Reason #2: There are tried and true benefits associated with essential oil use.

The use of plant-based therapies dates back to ancient times and evidences have been found in Egypt, Greece, Rome, Iran, India, & China including beauty treatments, food preparation, rituals and religious ceremonies. A shift occurred during the 19th century with new developments in chemistry and distillation. A french chemist explored and expanded the practice of using essential oils for personal and clinical applications. Traditional methods of use have shown great anecdotal evidence that oils have wellness benefits. In addition, modern science is rapidly advancing and studies on essential oil use continue to expound on their potential.

I Heart Oils Tip: There is a lot of conflicting information about essential oils. A lot of information is based on outdated ideas and studies done on oils of questionable quality. Research continues to study both individual aromatic constituents and whole essential oils. There are many places to look for essential oil research online. When considering scientific research, look for peer reviewed studies, published in reputable journals, from an accredited university, institution or other scientific body.

Reason #3: Essential oils are simple to use.

High quality, therapeutic pure essential oils can be used in three ways. Aromatic use, breathing in the scent of the oil, is the best way to influence mood and emotion. Our sense of smell can also influence many physiological pathways including hormones and other metabolic processes. Topical use, applying oils to your skin (often with a carrier oil), is great way to take advantage of localized benefits such as soothing a sore muscle. Because the molecules are small, topical use can allow for the therapeutic properties to be absorbed quickly into the bloodstream from the skin for benefits throughout the whole body. Some essential oils are approved for internal use. Bottle labeling indicates which oils can be used internally. They can be used in cooking, added to water and other beverages, swallowed in capsules, or placed under the tongue depending on the oil. (More Info: How To Use Essential Oils)

I Heart Oils Tip: If you don’t have a diffuser, try adding a few drops of oil to a tissue and putting it in your pillow case or on a fan to disperse the smell of the essential oil throughout your room or add a few drops to water in a spray bottle to use as a room spray.

Reason #4: Essential oils are safe, powerful, and effective.

One drop of an essential oil contains enough molecules to cover every cell in our bodies. If you use them wisely, you can positively impact your mind and body with very little product use. Make sure you are using quality essential oils that have been tested for purity and potency.

I Heart Oils Tip: A good model of use is to apply oils in small amounts over time. 1-2 drops applied every hour is better than multiple drops all at once. Follow the directions on the bottle and dilute hot oils when applying topically

Reason #5: Essential Oils are versatile and cost effective.

High quality oils may seem expensive at first glance. However, because they are so potent, they are actually very affordable when looking a cost per drop.  An application of Lemon, for example, can be around .04 per use. Lemon is very versatile. It can be used for to flavor water, to enhance recipes, as a DIY cleaner, and aromatically to lift mood. That’s a great deal!

I Heart Oils Tip: Using pre-diluted oils such as the doTerra Touch line or making your own roller bottle blends is a great way to use oils safely and cost effectively.  For adults, a good dilution ration for adults is 10 drops of essential oil to a 10ml roller bottle, filled the rest of the way with carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil. Adjust as needed for sensitive skin, young children, or the elderly.

Reason #6: Essential oils are eco-friendly.

Using essential oils for health and wellness and making your own products helps reduce packaging waste, trips to the store, harsh chemicals, and toxins in your home and body. Proper sourcing ensures the supply of essential oils continues for high quality yield.

I Heart Oils Tip: Recycle your essential oil bottles or reuse them to share samples, create your own blends, sprays, and rollers. Many sources online carry tools that fit standard bottle sizes.

Reason #7: Essential oils can support developing economies worldwide.

Deliberate sourcing can help improve the global economy by partnering with or helping create growing co-ops around the world. This creates more stable pay for farmers, distillers, and those who work to produce the oils. Purchasing oils through an independent consultant helps continue the economic benefits for everyone in the supply chain. (More Info: doTERRA Co-Impact Sourcing)

I Heart Oils Tip: For maximum shelf-life, store oils in a dark bottle, with the cap on tight, in a dry and cool place out of direct sunlight.

Reason #9: Essential oils are empowering and promote self-reliance.

Adjusting your mindset and habits to include essential oils can be a gradual process for some. Often times we automatically turn to outside influences rather than turn personally inward to check in with what’s going on in our bodies and lives.
